Thassos (or Thasos) is the most northern island of the Aegaean Sea
and with 390 squarekilometres No. 9 of the Greek Islands. Located
within the district of Kavala, Thassos is geographically part of
Greek-Macedonia and reknown for its beautiful green hills and rich flora
that have earned Thassos the nickname "The Green Island".
Today Thassos-City (also: Limenas or Thasos) is the island's capital. In former years Panagia which - as Thassos-City - is in the north was the main town.
Tourism has in recent years (but with giant steps!) become Thassos'
main source of income, surpassing even the island's famous black olives.
The Green Island offers manifold opportunities for the water-enthusiasts: countless sandy beaches (some of those hidden within undisturbed bays) and crystal-clear water most of the season allow for swimming and snorkeling and even diving-schools have opened recently in all major cities/villages along the coast. Fishing is popular from the rocky cliffs and even beginners will find a motorboat or jetski to ride in the touristic regions.
Wanderers will find the rolling hills inviting and are prone to fall in love with Thassos' unspoiled nature and often still rather pristine mountain-villages.
